Correct Usage of English Words - 1

While waiting for the results of the ALS A&E tests held on October 2011, the following correct usage of English words will be beneficial for those who will be taking the examination this year:

A. ADVICE and ADVISE
    Advice is a noun (panggalan); advise is a verb (pandiwa).

Examples:
1. My teacher advised me to take an engineering course. I will follow her advice.
2. My advice to you is to follow your heart.

3. My boss advises me about my job from time to time.
4. In spite of her mother's advice, John enrolled in a military school.
5. My father had advised me to keep away from trouble.

B. AS FAR AS and UNTIL
    As far as refers to distance; until refers to time.

Examples:
1. Maria walked as far as the eyes can see.
2. Pedro will wait for you until ten o-clock.
3. My dog ran as far as two blocks from our house and then turned back.

4. She sat there alone until the sun set.
5. You cannot leave my class until you hear the bell.

Comments on the Late Release of ALS A&E Oct 2011 Test Results

The late release of the October 2011 Alternative Learning System (ALS) Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) test by the Department of Education draws a lot of reactions from those who took the examinations. Here are some of these comments:

Please be informed that the list of passers for the 2011 ALS A&E Test

will be released on the first week of May to be posted at the DepED

website.

In this connection, kindly refer to the following message from the

Bureau of Alternative Learning System (BALS) regarding your concerns,

for your information and reference:

The reason why it was moved to May is due to the delay of the bidding

process. Bids & Awards Committee contracted to Service Providers to do

the checking of the multiple choice and essay.

But DepED BALS is working to fast track the checking. Perhaps, last week

of April will be the release of the results of A&E Exam.

BALS is working for the immediate release but you have to understand the

situation we are encountering at the moment.

We understand the situation with regards to the delay in the posting of the ALS October 2011 examination results, our heartfelt support to the individuals charged with this massive task, but, we are expecting more from our educators and the people charged with coming up with the examination results, we are supposed to be the next generation of leaders of this country, it is our responsibility to continually push the boundaries of what is possible, and i believe that we can come up with the results if only proper planning and management of the checking of examinations was laid and implemented.
Up to what level of sanity will we tolerate the inefficient conduct of this activity?

Why is it that it's only in this date that the "bidder" chosen to correct the exams is selected? What are they doing with the papers since October? Didn't they know that academic years in the Philippines start on June and that there are lots of requirements,such as entrance exams,that are only held or available prior to April or May ? And didn't they know that what they are doing will only prejudice those who took the exam by not knowing what course of action they will take rather than help them finish their studies? With this I'm really at pity our country's system

Last year the result had been published on February 23. At this year they say the result will be publish by the last week of February. But what is happening now?? We are on the mid of March.. There's a lot of examiners are waiting for them to enroll in college. And some to use the Diploma for applying a job like me. So to the head of the Department of Education please we are all loosing our patience.So please post the result as soon as possible. We all understand that its hard for you to rush the checking of our essays but we hope that you also understand our situation that we need the result/Diploma etc. So please we hope we can have any response from the Department of Education. No GUYS! It's not because of the number of test taker but it's because of the sluggish processing of the bidding! (Nagbibid pa sila para sa magchecheck ng papers 'coz they're looking for the cheapest bidder.) I've been here for almost every 2 days.. I think the results will really come on 1st week of april or last week of march.. anyway, gudluck for everybody.. we couldn't do anything but to WAIT be PATIENT..

I just finished calling the BALS(Bureau of Alternative Learning System) and I asked about the A&E Exam results last October 2011 and they say that "kakatapos lang ng bidding and kakukuha lang ng nanalong bidder/checker sa mga test papers and binigyan sila ng 2 months kaya mga JUNE pa lalabas ang results"! How foolish!? They are not thinking that MOST OF the passers are going to enroll for college! We should make a petition! Who owns a twitter account? We should tweet the higher gov. officials! Sana naman sa DepEd, magawa nyo naman pabilisin lumabas ang resulta dahil maraming umaasa sa iyong mga kabataan o darating estudyante sa kolehiyo na gusto ng malaman nila ang kanilang mga resulta at para maisagawa nila ang magandang pagplaplano nila sa knilang kinabikasan ang makapasok sa Unibersidad. Did You Pass the 2011 ALS A&E Exam?

Until now, the results of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Accreditation and Equivalency (A and E) has not been released by the Department of Education (DepEd). The reason is that DepEd only chose recently the winning bidder that will mark the test papers. Judging from the number of ALS takers, it will take at least two months to release the result. This fact brings a lot of dilemma and problem to the examinees who wish to enroll in college. One of the requirements to take the college entrance examination of most colleges  is the ALS certificate issued by the DepEd. Without this document, the ALS takers are in limbo. 

How do you know if you pass the ALS Oct 2011 exams? One way of knowing is to know the 2010 ALS  results.  The number of items in the multiple choice in the Elementary Level was 160. As I browsed over the list of passers, I found out that to pass, your Standard Score should be 90, equivalent to 60% with a percentile rank of 50. In the Secondary Level with 250 items, you need at least 95 Standard Score which is equivalent to 70% with a percentile rank of 70.

However, to be considered a passer, your essay must have a Raw Score of at least 2. This means that even if you answered correctly all the multiple choice questions but your essay was graded as 1, you failed the test.

Be patient. DepEd must be blamed for their failure to release the results early. Somebody out there might be sleeping on his job or irresponsible enough to know that this is very important to out of school youths hoping to study again. 

Release of ALS A&E Oct 2011 Results

The release of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Exams taken on October 23 - 24, 2012 is expected to be delay. This information was gathered when ALS examinees called the Bureau of Alternative Learning System (BALS) and revealed that "they just selected the winning bidder who shall check the test papers within 2 months." With this, it is expected that the result might be announced in late April or early May 2012.

Those who are waiting the results of the ALS Oct 2011 exams and who wish to take college entrance exams, talk to thee registrars of the college of your choice and tell them the problem. They shall let you take the entrance test with certain conditions. It is far better than just wait.

ALS A & E Oct 23, 2011 Test Passers

UPDATE: VIEW THE ALS A&E OCT 2011 RESULTS HERE:

Takers of the October 23-24, 2011 Alternative Learning System (ALS) Accreditation and Equivalency (A and E) Program of the Department of Education (DepEd) have becoming more impatient for the very slow release of the result. It's been over 3 months now and yet no result has been announced by the DepEd. However, examinees should realize that it's the essay part that makes the marking more difficult. This is because, even if you passed the multiple choice part and failed to get the required point in the essay part, you will not be included in the list of passers. Persons who are making the marks are very careful in this task because it might ruin the dreams of those who took the October 2011 ALS exams.

The October 2010 ALS A and E examination result was released in February 2011. I guess that DepEd will do the same this time. Patience, patience and patience is all we need.

Please note that DepEd will distribute the October 2011 ALS A and E result to Regional Offices BEFORE it will be posted in its website. So, inquire at your nearest school to confirm. The result might already be there.

Congrats to the passers! And to the non-passers, don't fret. It might not be your lucky day but it will be soon.

Naiinip na ang maraming kumuha ng pagsusulit sa nakaraang Alternative Learning System (ALS) Equivalency & Accreditation (E &A) noong Oktubre 2011. Ito ay sa dahilang hindi malaman ng mga kumuha ng high school level kung sila ay maaaring makapag-enrol sa kolehiyo.

Inaasahang sa Pebrero 2012 ilalabas ng DepEd ang resulta ng pagsusulit katulad ng nangyari noong pagsusulit sa Oktubre 2010. Ang pagkakaantala ay maaaring dahil sa essay o sanaysay na parte ng pagsusulit dahil ito ay binabasa at manu-manong binibigyang grado ng mga gurong naatasang magbigay ng grado.

Sa mga kumuha ng pagsusulit, huwag mainip at lalabas din yan!

Colloquium on Alternative Learning System (ALS)

In compliance with DepEd Order No. 39, s. 2009, the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) issued DepEd Advisory No. 06, s. 2012 on January 5, 2012 to announce the National Colloquium on Alternative Learning System (ALS). Yesterday, 24 September 2011, is the last day for the October 2011 Alternative Learning System A & E Test. I guess most of the candidates who took the test just said "thank you" that it's over. However, the tension begins to boil until the release of the October 2011 ALS A & E Test Results. Last year, the results was released in February 2011. I guess DepEd shall do the same next year.

In the meantime, those who are sure that they "made it" especially those who are planning to take college courses should register and take the entrance exam of the school they are planning to enroll. If the high school diploma issued by DepEd is the problem, you can talk to the Registrar and tell him/her your situation. Maybe they will accept you to take the test but you will only be officially registered if you submit your documents from DepEd.

At this time, review for your college entrance examinations. Most colleges and universities focus their entrance exams on English, Mathematics, Verbal & Abstract Reasoning.

Correct Usage: Between You and Me VS Between You and I

The correct English grammar is "between you and me".

Between is a preposition. In English, a preposition must be followed by an indirect object pronoun.
Me is an indirect object pronoun.
I is a subject pronoun.
Therefore, between must be followed by me, not I
