Sample Test Problems on Mathematical & Problem Solving Skills

 1. An architect is making a plan for a new playground. If the picture below is the playground, how much fencing needs to go up to keep the beds in the circle?

GIVEN:  the radius (r) of the playground is 14 meters

REQUIRED:  the fence needed to encircle the playground or its Circumference or Perimeter

FORMULA:   Circumference (C) of the circle = 2πr , where π is pi and r is the radius.

SOLUTION:

C = 2πr

Let pi = 3.14

C = 2 x (3.14) x 14 = 87.92 meters

2. A goat is tethered by a rope 3.5 m long. Find the maximum area that the goat can go.

GIVEN: radius (r) = 3.5 meters

REQUIRED: Area (A) of the circle

FORMULA: Area (A) of a circle  ==> A = π r2

SOLUTION:  A = (3.14) (3.5) (3.5) = 38.465 square meter
