Basic Mathematical Competencies to Pass the ALS A&E Test

1) Solve problems involving multiple steps using 4 fundamental operations.

2) Demonstrate understanding of the order of operations of the 4 fundamental operations to solve 3 or 4 steps problem applying the principle of MDAS.

3) Give sample formulas or equations in words; express them in whole numbers, and use mathematical symbols to solve simple problems in real life.

4) Multiply and divide fractions including mixed numbers in real-life problems.

5) Solve problems in daily life involving decimals that are money-related.

6) Apply knowledge of addition and subtraction of integers to solve daily problems.

7) Solve problems using the Pythagorean Theorem.

8) Compute the diameter, radius, and circumference of a circle using the value of pi.

9) Use appropriate formulas in solving daily life problems involving area of plane figures, square, rectangle, triangle, parallelogram, e.g.

10) Use appropriate formulas to find the volume of various solid in solving everyday problems.

11) Solve daily life problems involving rate.

12) Read and interpret data presented in a circle graph (pie chart).

13) Construct a pie graph (pie chart) to organize, present, and analyze data from everyday life situations.

14) Read and interpret the scale on the map.
