ANSWERS
Question 1: Finding Details

    • Ben plays basketball every Saturday morning. Today is Saturday, but it is raining hard. Ben is looking out the window with a sad face.

    • Question 1: Why is Ben sad?

    • (A) He lost his basketball.
      (B) He cannot play outside because of the rain.
      (C) He woke up too late.
      (D) He does not like Saturdays.
    • The correct answer here is B: He cannot play outside because of the rain. Let us look closely at why this is correct. The text tells us two main clues. First, Ben always plays basketball on Saturdays. Second, today is Saturday, but it is raining hard. Because it is raining, he is stuck inside looking out the window with a sad face. Option A is a trick because the story mentions basketball, but it never says he lost it. Option C is wrong because there is no mention of time. And Option D is wrong because he actually loves Saturdays since that is when he plays his favorite game. Great job if you got letter B!
Question 2: Identifying the Main Idea

Trees give us fresh air to breathe. They give us fruit to eat and wood to build houses. Trees also provide a home for many birds and insects.

    • Question 2: What is the paragraph mostly about?

    • (A) How birds build nests.
      (B) Why trees are important.
      (C) Different kinds of fruit.
      (D) How to build a house.

    • The correct answer is B: Why trees are important. In reading comprehension, the main idea is the big topic that connects every sentence. Every single line in this short paragraph tells us something good that trees do for humans and animals. They give us air, food, building materials, and shelter. Options A, C, and D are just small details mentioned in the text, but they do not describe the whole paragraph. If the choice only talks about one sentence, it is not the main idea! So, letter B is our winning answer.
Question 3: Context Clues / Vocabulary

The heavy box was too enormous for the small boy to lift by himself. He had to ask his older brother for help.

    • Question 3: What does the word enormous mean?

    • (A) Very small
      (B) Light
      (C) Very large
      (D) Broken

    • The correct answer is C: Very large. Let's examine the context clues that gave us the answer. The sentence tells us the box is 'heavy' and the boy is 'small'. It also says he cannot lift it 'by himself' and needs a bigger, older brother to help. If a box is heavy and a small child can't lift it, it must be massive or very large. Enormous means huge. Options A and B mean the exact opposite, and option D has nothing to do with the boy's ability to lift it. Letter C is correct.
Question 4: Cause and Effect

Liza forgot to bring her umbrella this morning. On her way home from school, a sudden heavy downpour occurred. She arrived home completely soaked.

    • Question 4: What caused Liza to get soaked?

    • (A) She stayed at school too late.
      (B) She forgot her umbrella during the rain.
      (C) She played in the rain with friends.
      (D) She walked home too slowly.

    • The correct choice is B: She forgot her umbrella during the rain. In this story, the 'effect' or the result is that Liza got completely soaked. Why did this happen? It happened because a sudden downpour occurred and she had no protection because she forgot her umbrella. If she had her umbrella, she wouldn't be soaked. Options A, C, and D are not mentioned anywhere in the short story. The test will often try to make you guess realistic reasons like 'walking slowly,' but if it's not written in the text, do not choose it! Stick to the facts in the passage.
Question 5: Character Traits

Even though she was tired from working all day, Maria cooked dinner for her sick neighbor and cleaned up his kitchen before leaving.

    • Question 5: What kind of person is Maria?

    • (A) Lazy
      (B) Selfish
      (C) Kind and helpful
      (D) Forgetful

    • The correct answer is C: Kind and helpful. Maria's actions speak loudly here. Even when someone is exhausted from working a full day, choosing to cook and clean for a neighbor who is sick shows a high level of care and helpfulness. Option A, lazy, is the opposite because she worked all day and did extra chores. Option B, selfish, is incorrect because she put someone else’s needs before her own rest. Option D is not supported by any text. So, letter C is our correct answer.
Question 6: Making Inferences

The sky grew dark, and a cold wind began to blow. Streetlights turned on early, and people on the sidewalk started rushing into shops.

Question 6: What will most likely happen next?

                    (A) The sun will rise.
                    (B) It is going to rain.
                    (C) People will go swimming.
                    (D) It is time for breakfast.

The correct answer is B: It is going to rain. The passage gives us heavy clues that a                             storm or heavy rain is arriving. Dark skies, sudden cold winds, and streetlights turning on                     early due to the darkness are all signs of a storm. Furthermore, people are running into                     shops to seek shelter so they do not get wet. Option A and D are incorrect because dark skies and streetlights turning on imply evening or storm conditions, not morning. Option C is wrong because people do not run away into shops if they are planning to go swimming. Letter B is the logical next step."
Question 7: Sequence of Events

First, Mark mixed the flour and sugar. Next, he poured the milk into the bowl. Finally, he placed the tray inside the hot oven.

    • Question 7: What did Mark do right after adding the milk?

    • (A) He ate the cake.
      (B) He mixed flour and sugar.
      (C) He put the tray in the oven.
      (D) He bought the ingredients.

    • The correct choice is C: He put the tray in the oven. To solve sequencing questions, you must look at transition keywords like 'First', 'Next', and 'Finally'. The question asks what happened after adding the milk. The sentence says 'Next, he poured the milk...'. The very next sentence starts with 'Finally, he placed the tray inside the hot oven.' Therefore, placing it in the oven is the immediate next action. Option B happened before the milk, and options A and D are not part of the sequence steps listed. Letter C is correct!
Question 8: Author's Purpose

Do not forget to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds using soap and clean water. This simple habit stops the spread of germs and keeps your family safe.

    • Question 8: Why did the author write this?

    • (A) To tell a funny story.
      (B) To persuade readers to wash their hands.
      (C) To explain how soap is made.
      (D) To complain about germs.

    • The correct answer is B: To persuade readers to wash their hands. The text starts with a direct instruction or command: 'Do not forget to wash your hands.' The author then gives good reasons, like stopping germs and keeping families safe, to convince or persuade you to practice this habit. It is not a funny story (Option A), it doesn't give a factory recipe for making soap (Option C), and it isn't just a complaint (Option D). The core goal is persuasion to change your action, making letter B the right answer.
Question 9: Fact vs. Opinion

             (1) The Philippines is an archipelago with over 7,000 islands.                                                   (2) Boracay is the most beautiful beach in the entire world.

    • Question 9: Which statement is an opinion?

    • (A) Statement 1
    • (B) Statement 2
      (C) Both statements
      (D) Neither statement

    • The correct answer is B: Statement 2. Let’s break this down. Statement 1 can be proven true by science, geography, and maps. The Philippines objectively has over 7,000 islands, making it a proven fact. Statement 2 uses the phrase 'most beautiful'. Beauty is a personal feeling and matter of taste. Someone else might think a beach in Palawan or another country is more beautiful. Any sentence that uses subjective words like beautiful, best, worst, or delicious is an opinion. Thus, only Statement 2 is an opinion, making B our correct choice.
Question 10: Summary Selection

Sari-sari stores are small neighborhood stores in the Philippines. They sell daily needs like soap, snacks, and canned goods in small amounts. They help local communities access goods easily without traveling to big markets.

Question 10: What is the best summary of this text?

                    (A) Sari-sari stores sell expensive items.
                    (B) Big markets are better than sari-sari stores.
                    (C) Sari-sari stores provide convenient daily goods to local neighborhoods.
                    (D) Most Filipinos want to open a store.

The final correct answer is C: Sari-sari stores provide convenient daily goods to local                     neighborhoods. A perfect summary must contain the main idea and main purpose of the                     text without adding outside opinions. Sentence one says they are local neighborhood                            stores, sentence two says they sell daily needs, and sentence three says they make                            access easy, which means convenient. Option C perfectly binds all these facts together.                        Options A and B introduce negative comparisons not found in the text, and option D is an                     assumption that isn't written down anywhere. Congratulations to everyone who chose                            letter C!"
